H Mart @ Madang
Asian supermarket in the basement of the Madang Mall
Koreatown in Los Angeles has a significant Filipino population and they are catered to by a number of stores and restaurants focused on their particular appetites. Snacks from the Philippines like chips, crackers and candy are available at two large supermarkets that carry Filipino-centric merchandise. Breads and pastries suited to the Philippine palate are available at two different bakeshops, across the street from each other.
These grocery stores and bakeshops where you can buy Filipino snacks are all centered on Vermont Avenue, just north of Third Street.
Examples of Filipino snacks you can buy in Koreatown? Chicharon, Polvoron, Cornik, Ensaymada…
You can sometimes even buy large cans of Skyflakes saltine crackers at the Korean supermarket H-mart at the Madang Mall on Western Avenue!
Both H-mart and Gaju Market on 5th & Western carry mellorine (Filipino ice cream), specifically the San Miguel Gold Label brand, which is known as Magnolia in the Philippines. H-mart has them slightly cheaper, but Gaju Market has more flavors, like combinations of ube, mango and halo-halo.
If you’re Filipino / Filipino-American and/or the type of person who goes for Filipino food, make sure to read up about the Magnolia Ice Cream scandal.
To order Filipino snacks online in the United States, visit the Fil Am Store based in our own state of California, which receives the freshest stock from across the Pacific all year round.
