The old Gaju Market on the northeast corner of 5th & Western is back!
Hannam is an old Korean supermarket known for discounted produce, meats, and liquor like soju. It’s a good place to buy snacks made in Korea. They also carry a few Japanese items. There is an eatery inside called Yanusa. The sign outside that says “Market World” in English. Open seven days a week, from 7:00 am to 12:00 midnight. Pro tip: Try not to shop here on Sunday, when the free-parking lot is madness and the cramped aisles inside are jammed full of shopping carts.
Han Kook is a large Korean supermarket with a notable wall of graffiti on Western Avenue, just south of Beverly Boulevard. Update: The popular wall of graffiti on one side of HK Super was removed in 2014. 한국 (Hangook) means Korea and 슈퍼 (Syoo-poh) is Korean for super, which is short for supermarket. Japanese snacks, fresh seafood, packaged banchan (Korean side dishes), American staples at a high markup, Latino products, fruits, and vegetables. Also inside HK Super: Cake House HK Fried Chicken Wool Um Ma The sign in front says the supermarket is open 7 AM to 12 PM, but they mean 12 AM, as in midnight.
Zion Market is a relatively new but cramped Korean supermarket on the ground floor of the City Center mall on 6th Street. It is open seven days a week from 8:00 am to 12:00 midnight. This is a convenient place to buy fresh fruit, Korean snacks, live seafood, fresh produce, beer, and prepared food to go, such as kimbap. Zion Market has other branches in Buena Park, San Diego, Irvine and Cerritos.
The Galleria Market on Olympic & Western is a clean and extensive supermarket with an emphasis on Korean products, including freshly prepared banchan (side dishes) and Korean ingredients packed and ready to combine for meals. Produce section with fruits and vegetables. Fish & Seafood.
Carries Japanese, American, European and Latin American products. Also has a deli section featuring banchan (side dishes) to go. Produce department includes organic fruits and vegetables. Fish, meats, shellfish, eggs and jars of kimchi are stocked. Located inside Koreatown Plaza by the parking garage downstairs.
