The establishment of an SMTown Museum in Los Angeles was announced in 2013, with the building being purchased in July of the year.

The space was formerly occupied by the Orchid Club on the southwest corner of 6th Street & Oxford Avenue, a few steps away from the CVS, the Metro subway station, and the Madang Plaza on Western Avenue.

S.M. Ent is a South Korean entertainment corporation known for slave contracts and legal disputes with their trainees and contract celebrities. Notably in recent years, the company has engaged in the assassination of the characters of Wu Yifan and Lu Han, two of their Chinese stars who had filed lawsuits to formalize their escape from slavery.
