What Does Kopan Mean?
Kopan Izaya is a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant, and according to the owner, Kopan is a combination of the words Korea and Japan.
In South Korea, however, the Paris Baguette bakery chain has trademarked the name “Kopan” for their pastries filled with sweet red-bean paste, which they actually sell at the two shops they’ve opened in France. To them, “Kopan” stands for “Korean bread.” The word “pan” came from the Japanese パン which in turn came from the Portuguese “pão,” reflecting the influence of Portuguese traders in Japan during the 16th century. Note that Koreans pronounce this “pan” as “pang” so you’ll hear them say “Kopang.”
