Shiseido was established as the Shiseido Pharmacy by Arinobu Fukuhara, a former pharmacist for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The company’s name is derived from a passage in the Chinese classic I Ching, meaning “praise the virtues of the earth which nurtures new life and brings forth significant values.”

Shiseido’s product categories include skin care, makeup, body care, hair care, and fragrances. It introduced innovative products like the Rainbow Face Powder with seven colors in 1917, when white powders were the norm in Japan.
