Koreatown Gateway Sign: Olympic & Vermont

Two pairs of Koreatown gateway structures can be seen on either side of Olympic Boulevard, along the stretch that the city has formally designated as Koreatown.

One pair is on the western end, just a few steps east of Western Avenue. Another pair is on the eastern end near Olympic Boulevard & Vermont Avenue. (The photo above is one of the gateway structures near Vermont, on the north side of Olympic.)

Aside from the prominent white stencil announcing the area’s designation as Koreatown, each structure is topped with a Bong Huang (봉황), a mythical bird recognized in East Asian culture as a symbol of prosperity and happiness.
